The purpose of this study of women in Freeman's short stories is threefold. " These chapters classify much of Freeman's large and uneven oeuvre of short fiction, providing a heretofore unavailable paradigm for further study and teaching of this author's primary theme of women's relationships in turn-of-the-century New Page xix England. Secondly, in doing so they introduce and discuss many previously uncollected and/or lesser-known Freeman stories along with those better-known works that have been instrumental in the recent resurgence of her popularity.

Of Freeman's short stories, 146 were collected in her lifetime and issued between 1887 and 1927 in fourteen separate volumes. 4 Stories written specifically for childrenand Freeman was an extremely popular children's writer for a portion of her careerare excluded from this study. Likewise, this work is not primarily concerned with Freeman's other artistic ventures, her novels, plays, nonfiction, or poetry, although in appropriate places such works are cited to better illustrate the point under scrutiny.

They completed "Freewarren," a showplace of considerable beauty and size in Metuchen, in 1907; a year earlier they had held an elaborate groundbreaking ceremony complete with a commemorative poem and house prayer written by Mary in which she asked God to grant them both "years of love, health and peace in this House" (Kendrick, 264). Elegant and tasteful both inside and out, this home must have symbolized for Freeman the pinnacle of her dreams, for at this point in her career she epitomized the American success story.
